Pre-adoption education resources for those hoping to adopt, whether through the foster care system, private agencies, or independent adoption, are widely available. You'll find a selective list below. Start there, no matter which type of adoption you'll be deciding on. These resources will help you feel more comfortable with the adoption process in general and with the specifics of your chosen type of adoption. The links below will guide you through the benefits of pre-adoption parenting classes, how to prepare for adoption with your family, and even how to become a foster parent. The latter is perfect for those looking to adopt from foster care, but want to take several or many children into your home until you find the right match for you and your family.

Being a parent isn't easy, but these resources should help make the path a little less severe. When you know what to expect, you can prepare. When you are prepared, you can become a confident and loving parent. Taking advantage of the resources below doesn't mean you won't experience trials and hard times in the years to come. However, the offered education and training will give you a secure foundation of knowledge to build upon. As long as you're open to learning and improving as a parent, you will be on the right parenting path. These pre-adoption training and education classes will help you get on that path.

Pre-Adoption Parenting Classes: Are They Necessary?
Those adopting through the U.S. foster care system are required to take parenting classes as part of their homestudy process, and while some private agencies are adding this requirement, many agencies and attorneys do not require adoptive parent preparation classes.

Adoption Learning Partners
This new (2002) resource for online adoption education offers an excellent (and growing) selection of courses for adoptive families including "Conspicuous Families: Race, Culture & Adoption." New courses address the adoption tax credit and talking with children.

Adoption Road Map Family Preparation Course
From The Learning Center, this is an excellent course for future adoptive parents. It is an online version of an agency-taught or state adoption department adoption course. TLC is offered by the National Adoption Center. Cost: $100.

FosterParentTraining.com
Complete training course, except for hands-on certification and CPR requirements, for future foster and adoptive (in many states) parents. One year membership: $24 (reimbursable in many cases).

Foster Parent Training Online
The entire FosterParentscope Training program is presented in this award-winning Web site from Washington State. Adapted from the SUNY Fosterparentscope curriculum.

MAPP Training
(Model Approach to Partnerships in Parenting) Description of classes for those approaching adoption and foster parenting through their state public agencies.
